In laptop manufacturing and assembly, display panels are a typical example of a product that requires careful handling. The overall size of a laptop screen is not necessarily what makes automated handling difficult. The bigger challenge is that different models can have different dimensions, while the display surface and edges also need to be handled carefully. For production lines handling multiple screen sizes, conventional rigid grippers may require the gripping position to be adjusted for different products. In this application, a soft gripper is used to handle laptop screens with different dimensions.

One Production Line, Multiple Screen Sizes

The customer needed to handle laptop displays in different sizes.Since the length, width, and edge positions vary between models, the gripping position also needs to change accordingly. With a fixed rigid gripper, different products may require the gripping position to be adjusted or the fixture to be changed. For an automated production line handling multiple laptop models, this can add extra setup and changeover work. The main question in this application was therefore:How can one gripper handle laptop screens with different dimensions?

Flexible Contact for Different Screen Sizes

The fingers of a soft gripper are flexible and can adapt to the shape and size of the workpiece during gripping.Instead of relying on a completely fixed gripping geometry, the soft fingers conform to the actual contact area of the laptop screen. When the screen size changes, the fingers can adjust their contact position and shape accordingly. This helps reduce the need to repeatedly change the gripping position when switching between different screen sizes. For production lines handling multiple product models, this flexibility can be useful for simplifying product changeovers.

Reducing Concentrated Pressure During Handling

Laptop displays are relatively delicate electronic components.During automated handling, simply holding the screen securely is not enough. The gripping force and contact pressure also need to be considered.A rigid gripper has a fixed contact structure. If the gripping position or force is not properly matched to the product, pressure can become concentrated at specific contact points, particularly around the edges.A soft gripper provides a more compliant contact with the workpiece. Its flexible fingers can conform to the product instead of relying entirely on rigid contact surfaces. This can help distribute contact pressure more naturally during handling. For electronic products where surface condition and handling stability both matter, controlling contact pressure can be just as important as providing sufficient gripping force.

One Soft Gripper for Different Specifications

The purpose of this application is not simply to pick up one laptop screen. The more important point is to allow an automated system to handle different sizes of laptop displays without repeatedly redesigning or repositioning the gripping structure. For production lines with multiple models, frequent changeovers, or varying product specifications, this type of flexible gripping can reduce fixture adjustments and extend the range of products that can be handled with the same end-of-arm tooling.Different screen sizes do not always have to mean different grippers. When a product has varying dimensions and requires careful control of contact pressure, a soft robotic gripper can provide a more flexible approach to automated handling.
